In order to reach the growing international population, UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein decided to add English as an additional language to their website.
Adding a new language is a major transition for an existing website and its team, with the need for initial translation, additional editorial resources, and adaptation of workflows and responsibilities.
The idea of this project was to outsource as much as possible for the transition phase. Fortunately, by using the Drupal Translation Management (TMGMT) module, one can delegate the translation work to translation service providers with high efficiency.
It quickly became clear after an initial estimate of about 200,000 words to translate, that the greatest leverage in cost and speed-up is a more specific selection of what needs translation.
This project is a perfect example that improving the tooling in the Open Source space can lead to the best cost optimization and a better time to market.
We spent a full week improving Translation Management to the benefit of everyone and could decrease the amount of words to 120,000 and reduce the project timeline by about two months.
