We supported UNICEF Switzerland and Lichtenstein in the process of "reducing their ecological footprint" and optimized their website performance at the same time.
We (as a web agency) have been working with UNICEF Switzerland for a very long time now and we knew that there was a need to get closer to the ecological targets of the global non-profit organization.
Sustainability and sovereignty are now also an important part of corporate governance / identity in the IT sector.
The aim was to reduce the environmental impact, ensure data security in Switzerland and deliver consistently reliable performance. After a brief evaluation and migration meeting with platform.sh (which recently launched a hosting service in Switzerland), we found the solution.
The migration of the website to the significantly more energy-efficient data center in Switzerland was the optimal solution to achieve both the ecological goals and increase website performance.
The server migration reduced the CO2 footprint of UNICEF's website by up to 15 times.

The UNICEF website receives sustainable server space.
"The partnership with MD Systems and Platform.sh has consistently exceeded our expectations. Their innovative solutions and eco-friendly hosting practices have advanced our sustainability goals and allowed us to focus more on our core mission of improving the lives of children."
In the coming years, this change will generate energy and cost savings. UNICEF will be able to reinvest these freed-up resources in its projects, which will ensure additional benefits for the future of its projects.
This migration shows a clear trend for organizations to follow: To achieve sustainability goals, it's okay to think outside the box. With the right partner, you can modernize your operations while maintaining continuity.
UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein's switch to more environmentally friendly hosting sets an example for non-profit organizations worldwide.
Performance Insights: During the migration, it was identified that certain automated bots were sending an extremely high number of unnecessary requests to the website, which were largely suppressed. This process reduced the number of requests by around 30%, resulting in direct savings in computing power.
Good to know
Swiss data centers are interesting for companies for various reasons. Firstly, the form of energy used (Swiss server farms usually run on an energy mix that includes a high proportion of renewable energy), but also the data security due to the security measures used, the data protection law in force in Switzerland and the general political stability of Switzerland. And, last but not least, Switzerland is considered the country with the fastest internet speeds in the world.
